ZOO Planckendael acquired a concession for a 1,500 m² lounge in the renovated Mechelen Station. From 2025, Planckendael ZOO wants to welcome visitors to the park as soon as they arrive by train. The experience starts at the station itself and visitors can choose their sustainable transport to the park in Muizen, 3.8 kilometers away. ZOO Planckendael thus invests heavily in ecological mobility.

Green shuttle buses

50 000 visitors arrive at the station every year to take the ZOO Planckendael Express to the park from there. Planckendael ZOO has already replaced its traditional shuttle buses with two brand new CNG buses that run on gas. But the park goes much further.

“With Planckendael ZOO, we want to invest heavily to improve mobility to the park even more. The CNG buses were the first step, in the future you can reach the park in various exciting ways," says Dries Herpoelaert, general manager.

Alternative future options

ZOO Planckendael wants to encourage its visitors to choose the sustainable path even more with a range of green and fun transport options. Alternatives such as electric scooters, bicycles, a boat connection or even rickshaws are currently being looked at. An additional parking entrance on the canal welcomes these visitors with open arms.

“The lounge is located on the Arsenal side of the station, which is developing into a multimodal hub as part of a complete renovation. The presence of the Planckendael lounge in such a central junction will undoubtedly encourage visitors to take the train to Mechelen," says Bart Crols, spokesman for NMBS.

Ambitious

The ambitions are great: Planckendael ZOO aims to triple the number of visitors by train in five years' time, combined with an alternative means of transport. The reception area will become a center of choice for fun transport options, and at the same time, the visit will start here thanks to an experiential interior.

Did you know that visitors to ZOO Planckendael receive a 50% discount on their Discovery Ticket from the NMBS?
